Medium or large box: what goes where?

The golden rule: heavy things in small boxes, light things in big boxes. A large box full of books is too heavy to carry safely and can split (see how to pack books for moving). A medium box of duvets wastes space.

Medium boxes: 18 x 13 x 13 in (46 x 33 x 33 cm)

Use a medium removal box for:

  • Books, files, paperwork, vinyl and DVDs
  • Plates, glasses, pans, tins and jars
  • Tools, shoes and small appliances
  • Toiletries and bathroom things

Large boxes: 18 x 18 x 20 in (46 x 46 x 51 cm)

Use a large removal box for:

  • Duvets, pillows, bedding and towels
  • Cushions, throws and soft toys
  • Lampshades and light decorations
  • Folded clothes and coats

Wardrobe boxes: 18 x 20 x 40 in (46 x 51 x 102 cm)

A wardrobe box has a hanging rail, so shirts, suits, dresses and coats go straight from your wardrobe on their hangers and come out without creases.

Packing tip: Fill every box to the top. A half-empty box crushes when another is stacked on it, so pad the gap with towels or scrunched paper.

How many of each?

About two medium boxes for every large one suits most homes, which is how our moving kits are made up. Use the box calculator for your own numbers.
